Laser & SOA Product Engineer – PhotonicsFull-Time | Hybrid in Santa Clara | $240,000 - $250,000 + Bonus + Equity + Benefits
We are seeking a Laser & Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) Product Engineer to lead the transition of advanced photonic components from early feasibility through qualification and into volume production. In this role, you will own the productization of externally manufactured lasers and SOAs, ensuring they meet stringent performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements for integration into next-generation photonic modules and systems.
You’ll work closely with device, reliability, and module engineering teams, while acting as the technical point of contact with suppliers. Your work will directly impact product readiness, supplier maturity, and time-to-market for high-performance photonic technologies.
What You’ll Do
- Own the full product lifecycle of lasers and SOAs, from feasibility and qualification through volume ramp
- Define product specifications, limits, and acceptance criteria in collaboration with design and system teams
- Evaluate electrical, optical, and reliability performance, driving root-cause analysis of failures and variability
- Develop and execute qualification plans and test methodologies aligned with industry and customer standards
- Work hands-on with external suppliers to improve manufacturability, yield, and process robustness
- Lead maturity assessments and readiness reviews to support smooth transitions into production
- Partner with reliability, manufacturing, and supply-chain teams to resolve technical and production challenges
- Provide technical leadership in supplier discussions, audits, and joint development activities
- Translate device- and supplier-level data into actionable recommendations for product and process improvement
What We’re Looking For
- B.S., M.S., or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field
- 10+ years of experience with lasers, SOAs, or closely related photonic components
- Strong understanding of laser/SOA physics, performance metrics, and reliability mechanisms
- Experience with product qualification, reliability testing, and failure analysis
- Proven track record working with external vendors or foundries on process development, yield improvement, and quality
- Strong data analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, JMP, or similar tools
- Familiarity with industry reliability standards (e.g. Telcordia / GR-468)
- Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication and packaging processes is a plus
Why You’ll Love Working With Us
- Competitive compensation package including salary ($240-250K), bonus, equity, and full benefits
- Opportunity to work on core photonic building blocks critical to next-generation optical systems
- High-ownership role with direct influence on product readiness and manufacturing scale-up
