Director of Module Development | Santa Clara | $270k + Bonus + Equity

About the Company

We are supporting a fast-growing, venture-backed technology company building next-generation integrated photonic systems for high-performance applications. Their platform combines cutting-edge optics, electronics, and software to enable scalable, energy-efficient solutions for advanced data and communication technologies.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced senior leader to head up Module Development for next-generation ELSFP external laser modules. This individual will take full ownership of developing highly integrated modules that combine PCB electronics, photonics, packaging, and thermal engineering into a scalable, manufacturable product.

This role involves leading cross-functional engineering efforts to deliver high-performance, low-noise, and thermally stable laser modules, from early concept stages through to high-volume production, while also influencing the architecture and roadmap for future product generations.

Key Responsibilities:

Module Architecture & Development
  • Own end-to-end development of laser modules (PCB, optics, mechanics, thermal)
  • Define module architecture and drive key design trade-offs (performance, cost, power, manufacturability)
  • Lead co-design across optical, electrical, and thermal domains
Engineering Leadership
  • Build and lead a multidisciplinary team (electronics, mechanical/thermal, test/validation)
  • Set technical direction and lead design reviews
  • Establish best practices for design, integration, debugging, and validation
Execution & Delivery
  • Drive programs from prototype through EVT/DVT/PVT to production ramp
  • Partner with program management and operations to ensure on-time delivery
  • Own key metrics: noise, stability, yield, reliability, cost
PCB & Electronics
  • Oversee low-noise, high-performance PCB design for laser systems
  • Ensure strong power integrity, signal integrity, and EMI performance
  • Integrate laser drivers, TEC control, photodiode sensing, and feedback systems
Manufacturing & Supply Chain
  • Define assembly flow, calibration, and test strategy
  • Work with CMs/ODMs on PCB, optics, and laser component supply chain
  • Drive DFM/DFT, yield improvement, and cost optimisation
Reliability & Quality
  • Ensure compliance with reliability and qualification standards
  • Lead failure analysis and root cause resolution across modules and PCBs

Required Experience:

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Physics, or related field
  • 12–15+ years in optical modules or complex hardware systems
  • 5+ years in technical leadership roles
  • Strong background in PCB design (mixed-signal, low-noise, PI/SI)
  • Proven track record delivering hardware into volume production
